Home EV Charger Install in East Lothian

The brief

A homeowner in North Berwick had taken delivery of a new EV the week before and wanted a dedicated charger fitted to the driveway before he stopped relying on supermarket fast chargers. The property was a new build on a modern 100A supply, so capacity was not in doubt, but the consumer unit was almost full, the cable run to the driveway was around twelve metres including a wall penetration, and the owner wanted the install done tidily, without surface conduit running across the front of the house. The brief was a properly load-assessed 7kW tethered charger, smart-app controlled, registered with the DNO, finished in a morning.

What we did

Carlos went out for a survey the same week, looked at the consumer unit, measured the cable route, agreed the mounting position on the wall by the driveway and quoted in writing on the day. The install was booked for the following Wednesday morning.

• Load assessment: Confirmed the supply capacity from the meter and the spare capacity on the consumer unit. Confirmed that a dedicated EV circuit could be added directly off the board without needing a board upgrade.
• Cable route: Run from the consumer unit through the garage void, across the inside of the front wall and out through the rendered cavity at the driveway corner. Penetration sealed both sides, no surface conduit visible externally.
• Charger fitted: Ohme 7kW tethered unit fixed to the driveway wall at a height that suits the car's charge port and the homeowner's typical parking. Tethered cable chosen because the homeowner only ever charges this car at this charger.
• Dedicated circuit: 6mm twin and earth on its own RCBO at the consumer unit, sized for the 32A load, isolator fitted internally for safe maintenance.
• DNO notification: Filed with Scottish Power Energy Networks the same day so the install is on the register. Required for any home charger install on a single-phase supply.
• Commissioning and app pairing: Charger paired to the Ohme app on the owner's phone, schedule set for off-peak charging, certificate of installation issued and emailed before we left.

The result

A clean 7kW home charger that runs off the homeowner's electricity tariff at the cheapest overnight rate, with the app set up so he just plugs in and walks away. No surface conduit on the front wall, no visible cable run, and a charger that will keep the car topped up for the next decade without thinking about public charge points. Total time on site: just under three hours. The DNO confirmation came back inside a fortnight.
